How to stop gambling when you're winning
Quitting after a loss feels obvious. Quitting while you're up feels like walking away from a hot streak. That pull is one of the warning signs. Gamblers Anonymous asks: after a win, did you have a strong urge to return and win more? If you're reading this with money in an account, today is a good day to take it out and close the door.
The short version
- Withdraw everything today. Several states forfeit winnings once you're excluded, so cash out first.
- Then self-exclude at lifetime, in your state and in every app.
- Give the money a job before it's in your hands: a debt, a bill, an account someone else watches.
- Tell someone you won and quit, so you're not alone with the money.
Why a win makes it harder
- A win feels like proof you've figured it out. It's the same thinking that keeps people chasing after losses.
- Winnings feel like "house money," so betting them feels free.
- A win often sets up the next deposit. The balance sitting in the app is a reason to open it again.
Do this today
Withdraw the full balance
From every sportsbook, casino and prediction app. Don't leave a "small amount for later."
Self-exclude, lifetime if offered
In Pennsylvania and New York, for example, people on the list can't collect winnings. Cash out, then enroll in your state and exclude inside each app.
Move the money out of reach
Pay down a debt, pay ahead on a bill, or move it to an account a trusted person can see. When I quit, I handed my accounts to people I trusted.
Install a blocker
BetBlocker or Gamban, with someone else holding the password.
Tell one person
"I won and I'm done. Can you check on me this week?"
If you're still up overall, should you stop?
Yes. For a compulsive gambler there's no amount that ends it. Being up only means the losses haven't caught up yet. I told myself I'd quit hundreds of times, and a good run was always a reason to wait.
Going back is never an option I keep open. Walking away while you're up means you leave with something.
Common questions
Can I keep my winnings if I self-exclude?
Withdraw before you enroll. Many state programs, including Pennsylvania and New York, bar excluded people from collecting winnings.
Should I bet just a little of my winnings?
No. That's the habit asking for one more round. Withdraw it all and lock the door.
What should I do with the money?
Give it a job right away, like a debt or a bill, and let someone you trust see where it went.
